With a scientific name, the green-lipped mussel is called Perna canaliculus and comes from New Zealand. It is used to produce green-lipped mussel powder and extract, which are used for joint problems or problems with tendons and connective tissue. Even the Maori, the natives of New Zealand, appreciated the mussel and integrated it into their daily diet. It was noticeable that the indigenous people on the coast had virtually no chronic joint diseases. The Maoris in the country, on the other hand, had to deal more often with discomfort of the joints.
Researchers investigated this and found that the green-lipped mussel is an important helper in joint diseases. For this reason, the pharmaceutical industry quickly became aware of the New Zealand mussel and made powder, capsules and tablets from it. But also oils or extracts are extracted from the green-lipped mussel.
Origin of the green-lipped mussel
The green-lipped mussel is grown exclusively in New Zealand. Here it is bred mainly in the waters of the Hauraki Gulf and the Marlborough Sound. These waters are mostly untouched and are located in nature reserves. Thus, the controls are particularly high in order to ensure impeccable quality.
However, in order to obtain the valuable green-lipped mussel powder, the mussel must be able to have an age of 18 to 24 months. Only then is it ready for harvest, not when it can have the highest proportion of meat, but when it is on the verge of sexual maturity.
Even if some growers wait for the time of the highest meat content, no high-quality green-lip mussel powder can be produced from it. This is because the ingredients are highest when the mussel is on the verge of sexual maturity. If the meat content is very high, more green-lipped mussel powder can of course be obtained, but this is of poor quality.
Production of green-lipped mussel powder
If the green-lipped mussel is harvested just before sexual maturity, it must be processed quickly in order to minimise quality losses. After harvesting, the New Zealand mussel is refrigerated for a while, i am separated in the centrifuge of meat and shell. Afterwards, the mussel meat is freeze-dried in an elaborate and special process. This is necessary so that the liquid can be gently pulled out of the mussel meat.
Only when the liquid has been completely withdrawn will the shell be ground into green-lipped shell powder. The nutrients remain completely contained, but are not as high as, for example, in the green-lipped shell capsules. These are only produced from the germ glands of the shell and can be used especially in case of already existing joint complaints. The green-lipped mussel powder and the green-lipped mussel balm, on the other hand, are a tried and tested means to prevent joint problems.
Application Green-lipped mussel powder
The application of green-lipped mussel powder can be carried out in a very diverse way. It can be sprinkled, for example, in the morning muesli or yoghurt. However, the green-lipped shell powder must be taken regularly for a while in order to be able to develop its full effect. For this reason, it is also not suitable for acute treatment of pain or joint discomfort.
Especially for the elderly, the green-lipped shell powder can be an important helper, as with advanced age the joint lubrication is produced less and less. The ingredients, i.e. the glycosaming glycans, on the other hand stimulate the production of the joint lubrication and thus ensure that bone rupees do not occur. In addition, the green-lip mussel powder also contains proteins, trace elements and minerals as well as omega-3 fatty acids, which play an important role in the health of the body.
People usually take 1.5 to 2 grams of green-lipped mussel powder daily, with meals.
If you want to use the green-lipped shell powder for animals, small cats and dogs should scatter 0.5 grams of the powder over the food. Detailed information on the application in animals can be found in the article “Green-lipped mussel for horses and dogs”.
The use of the green-lipped mussel powder can take the form of a cure or as a permanent intake. The only important thing is to be aware that the effect will only begin after a few weeks, as it is a natural remedy. If you want to speed up the effect a bit, you can also take green-lipped shell capsules. These are provided with green lip mussel extract and therefore have a significantly higher effect than the powder. The green-lipped shell capsules are also suitable for animals and can be used without any problems. Here, however, attention must be paid to the exact dosage.
