Pomegranate – The Apple of Goddesses
Since ancient times, pomegranate has been valued as a food, aphrodisiacs, cosmetics and remedies. The plant, which originated in Asia, soon found its way into the wealthy. Today, it is mainly grown in the Mediterranean and Iran. As a tasty and decorative food, as a helpful dietary supplement and a valued addition to nourishing cosmetics, the pomegranate is widely popular.
The pomegranate in antiquity
The pomegranate is associated with the Syrian goddess Atargatis. And also in Greek mythology the pomegranate is said to have played an important role. Once Aphrodite, Hera and Athena would have argued over who would be the most beautiful. According to legend, the golden apple that Paris presented Aphrodite for victory was a pomegranate. Early on, the coveted pomegranates were used to treat diseases. They were used against diarrhea and ulcers. Roots, bark and boiled shell were considered as a remedy against bandworms. In Unani medicine,an Arabic-Islamic medicine, the pomegranate has long been known as a medication for diabetes mellitus.
The Pomegranate – Botany and Ingredients
The pomegranate, Offered. Punica granatum, belongs to the family of the Willow Family (Lythraceae). The Latin name is indicative of the fruit: Punica derives from the Latin punicus, the Roman name for the Phoenicians. Granantum comes from the Latin granum and means grain, core, seed. Its seeds make the pomegranate unmistakable.
Detected active ingredients in pomegranate
Even the shell of pomegranates is valuable ingredients. Here it is polyphenols, flavonoids, ellagitannines and precursors of anthocyanins that have been scientifically determined. In addition, minerals can be found in the shell of the pomegranate. In addition to calcium, potassium and magnesium, complex polysaccharides have been detected.
In its seed, various gallotannines and anthocyanins could be found out with the pomegranate. These active ingredients have proven mass anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Important organic acids could be detected in the seed shell. In addition to ascorbic acid, malic acid and citric acid, the seed mantle of the grant apples has pectin, polyphenols and anthocyanins.
Interesting for medicine and cosmetics is also the
for pomegranate. Here it is among others the valuable linoleic acids, the punicic acid, oleic acids, steroids and sterols that can have a positive influence on our health.
Last but not least, the leaves of the pomegranate tree are also used. Depending on the age of the leaf, they contain different amounts of iron, calsium, sodium and potassium. Tannins and glycosides are also among the ingredients of the leaves.
The pomegranate at the heart of research
As with many other fruits and plant parts, pomegranate emphasizes the importance of phytochemicals. Science made it its mission to gain new medical perspectives from the pomegranates again and again.
Pomegranate against cardiovascular diseases
Studies aimed to demonstrate a confirmed effect of pomegranate juice in terms of metabolic syndrome. In randomized, placebo-controlled studies (RCT, it was found that the consumption of pomegranate juice has antihypertensive effects. The patient’s cardiac circulation was noticeably increased. A study conducted with patients with narrowed carotus artery also showed positive results. They consumed the pomegranate regularly for a period of one year. At the same time, a control group was in the study. More deposits were found in the carotus artery in this group than at the beginning of the study. In contrast, the group that ate pomegranates reduced deposits by 35%.
Lower blood lipid levels with pomegranate
On the other hand, five studies have not confirmed the anti-inflammatory properties reported to pomegranates. The CRP level, which is considered an inflammatory feature, did not change. The effect on the lipid profile has not been clearly confirmed in the scientific sense in several studies, but other studies contrast with these results. Thus, it is not excluded that the consumption of pomegranate has a long-term positive effect on blood lipid levels. Further investigations will follow.
Pomegranates – helpful in breast cancer
Polyphenols in red wine and blueberries are attributed to having positive health effects. The pomegranate contains especially many of these valuable ingredients. However, the quality and content of polyphenols differ in pomegranate products, as has been established in the context of cancer research. An in vitro study has shown that the juice inhibits the body’s estrogen formation. In estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells, this led to growth inhibition. It was 80% lower than before, but the growth of healthy cells was not affected. A particularly good effect was achieved in several evaluations of fermented pomegranate juice.
Leukemia, prostate cancer and pomegranate
Pomegranate juice also proved successful in leukemia. Here, diseased cells reformed into healthy cells or died. The polyphenols also prevent the tumor from spreading. Under their influence, no new blood vessels form. Since 2016, the effects of pomegranate and its juice in prostate cancer have been increasingly investigated. However, there are still insufficient confirmed studies which would have led to a clear and convincing result. For this reason, according to conventional physicians, it is currently considered questionable whether the preventive intake of preparations from pomegranate is an effective protection against prostate cancer.
Pomegranate – A remedy for potency disorders
On the other hand, the interaction of potency or impotence and the ingredients from pomegranates seems to be certain. In randomized and placebo-controlled studies, it was found that the administration of pomegranate in juice form increased participants’ testosterone levels. This effect was also evident in females. In men, the influence in terms of eliminating impotence – erectile dysfunction – was noticeable. But also the voice and the beard growth changed in the subjects. The sperm became more mobile through the consumption of pomegranate preparations and were of better quality. In addition, sexual desireincreased, which in turn occurred in both sexes when they regularly ate pomegranate preparations.
Diabetes and pomegranate
Diabetics were not only found to have lowerblooded blood sugar. The intake of sugar in the intestine also ensured that sugar spikes were absent after eating. Pomegranate in various preparations is also considered helpful due to the ability to counteract the effects of oxidative stress. The natural sugar molecules contained are combined with the polyphenols. This improves blood values.
Increased liver function due to pomegranate
Especially the polyphenols in the pomegranate ensure that the liver can do its job. They promote the formation of enzymes that act as liver protection. A weak liver is stimulated to work by the pomegranate. The fact that oxygen radicals are inhibited by pomegranate preparations also leads to the fact that this provides further protection for this important organ. Pomegranate is considered valuable for the prevention of fatty liver disease. The pomegranate also seems to reduce damage caused by alcohol, nicotine and environmental toxins by its ability to bind free radicals.
Pomegranate in food
Due to the provenlibido-boosting effect, the pomegranate is a preferred aid during the large conversion phase in the woman’s body. Positive effects on the vaginal mucosa and the uterus are also attributed to the pomegranate. Due to the influence on the hormonal balance, pomegranate in the form of oil is considered to compensate for menopause complaints.
Pomegranate for nerve cells and brain
The flavonoids contained in pomegranates can improve brain performance. But another ingredient in the pomegranate has already been confirmed in laboratory studies: In experiments with mice, it was shown that the risk of suffering a stroke was lower in mice fed with pomegranates. Brain damage in offspring was also noticeably reduced. In contrast to the control group, 60% fewer brain damage to the mouse children due to lack of oxygen occurred. While this trait has not yet been clearly proven in randomised trials of human patients, there is little real doubt.
Pomegranate in action against oxidative stress
Oxidative stress has a negative effect throughout the body. Its influence in eye diseases is considered to be particularly detrimental. The cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are two of the diseases in which radical scavengers and the supply of nutrients have a positive influence on the course of the disease. Also in degenerative and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, the importance of a sufficient supply of valuable minerals and vitamins through the consumption and ingestion of pomegranate is unanimously affirmed. Last but not least, the pomegranate in its fight against oxidative stress causes obesity to be counteracted. This, in turn, would further increase oxidative stress. The pomegranate helps to break this bad circulation.
For health – preparations of pomegranate
Intolerances of pomegranates are rare. As with all acidic fruit starts, the teeth should not be brushed immediately after consumption in order to preserve the enamel.
As far as enjoyment is concerned, the fan community splits with the pomegranate: some consider crushing and removing the seeds to be problematic. With a little skill and practice and a few little tricks, however, the pomegranate can also be quickly made for consumption in the household. The pomegranate is rolled a few times. Cut off a lid with a sharp knife, then divide the fruit into segments. This way, the cores can be easily removed without much splash. The cores complement the most diverse dishes in a harmonious way. They fit fruit desserts and salad, add the finishing touches to exotic cuisine and even conjure up a star dish from typical German sauerkraut.
Pomegranate – preparations for everyday life and on the go
Concentrated in the active ingredients, to be taken quickly, the pomegranate can be bought in different preparations. As pomegranate juice, it is available in various containers in the supermarket and reform house. Tea blends as well as dietary supplements with pomegranate can be found in the grocery store, in drugstores, in the Reformhaus and in the pharmacy. However, as is often the case, more does not help: in the case of ready-to-use preparations, the preparation and dosage must be taken into account.
Pomegranate for the skin
The pomegranate was also discovered as a cosmetic agent in antiquity. In its original distribution area in the Near East, the women quickly realized that the pomegranate is good for their skin. This applies both to the consumption and processing of the oil for cosmetic purposes. High-quality oil from pomegranate seeds has its price. About 500 kg of fruit are needed from the pomegranate to produce 1 kg of oil. If attention is paid to organic farming and cold pressing, which conserve the ingredients, the product cannot be cheap.
Smooth skin with pomegranate
It has always been appreciated that the pomegranate smoothes the skin. This applies in two ways: the enjoyment of the fruits contributes to a better care of the skin and a uniform appearance, especially during conversion phases. This effect is supported by the ingredients that the pomegranate offers in cosmetic terms.
Pomegranate as a dietary supplement is considered a moisturizer for the skin. The moisture deposits are replenished, the first wrinkles are smoothed. The antioxidants in the pomegranate trap free radicals, ensuring that the skin renews faster and retains its elasticity. The phytoestrogens contained in the pomegranate can also have a rejuvenating effect on the skin. Pomegranate extracts are thought to stimulate collagen formation. Pigment spots can thus be prevented. The elasticity of the skin is maintained by collagen.
How does the application affect the skin?
Applied purely externally, the pomegranate also shows its good sides. Exfoliation is made from the cores, which naturally stimulates the formation of skin and at the same time frees the face and décolleté from old skin flakes. A tired, grey appearance of the skin is eliminated.
However, the ingredients are considered to be particularly valuable. Here the pomegranate offers
- Amino acids have a healing effect. They help to quickly subside skin impurities.
- Keratinocytes. They form a natural UV protection, contribute to wound healing and help against dry, scaly and cracked skin. At the same time, they have an immunizing effect against bacteria.
- Ellagic acid. This ingredient is considered to be brightening. Age-related pigment spots and freckles are mitigated. A more uniform complexion is achieved by the ellagic acid in the pomegranate.
- Phytosterols. They work against itching and skin irritation. Pomegranate is therefore recommended for sensitive skin.
- Thanks to the citric acid contained in the pomegranate, the pH of the skin is regulated. This is especially important when alkaline soaps are used for cleaning.
- The essential vitamins E and C as well as minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium do not only work from the inside out. The skin is also able to absorb these valuable ingredients from the pomegranate.
- The seed oil from pomegranate contains punicic acid. It makes the hair shine, it should also cause a strengthening of the hair growth. Pomegranate seed oil also has a balancing effect on an itchy, dry scalp.
Positive spiral – Pomegranate as a starter
A positive circulation is set in motion due to an increase in health and the improved appearance of the skin. The well-being is reflected in the skin, the radiance and the effect on others, in the opinion of the doctors, is considered as valuable support in the fight against diseases. This is especially true in later years of life, when the youthful momentum seems to be waning.
