The so-called Himalayan salt is a pink to orange colored rock salt. Despite relatively common properties and ingredients, Himalayan salt has established itself in people’s minds as a special feature among the numerous salts.
The mining sites in Pakistan or Poland suggest that there may be more appearance than being here. The almost mythical attributions to which the Himalayan salt owes its economic success are nevertheless interesting. Many such claims cannot be proven. Nevertheless, there are indeed health uses that make sense.
What is Himalayan salt?
The term “Himalayasalt” refers to a pink rock salt, which is said to have a high health value due to its mineral richness. This is as true as it is untrue. It is true that sodium chloride is vital for the organism. However, too much sodium can make you sick and increase blood pressure.
The Himalayan salt is traded as a particularly salt in health food stores, natural food shops, esoteric shops or at corresponding online addresses. The natural pink tint of the rock salt indicates the content of iron oxide. The ingredients in himalayan salt are quickly mentioned: it consists of almost 98 percent pure sodium chloride. Only a negligible 2-3 percent contains other minerals. These include the already mentioned iron particles, as well as potassium chloride, sulfates and lime, or gypsum. Basically, this is about natural impurities. However, these have no pollutant value. They can have minimal health benefits.
The pink rock salt, which we trade as “Himalayasalt”, comes mostly from Pakistan. The Khewra salt mine in Punjab province, near the city of Lahore, is home to one of the largest known rock salt deposits in the world. The so-called Himalayan salt has been mined there since the 16th century. But it is demonstrably not from the Himalayas. The term “Himalayasalt” is more used to evoke romantic associations with secret esoteric practices, and romanticized Buddhist countries such as Tibet and Nepal. It is also concealed that a small part of the so-called Himalayan salt in trade comes from Poland. So much for the Himalayas.
You can buy Himalayan salt as fine table salt, in larger crumbs for aromatizing drinking water, or as Himalayan salt granules. In larger blocks, Himalayan salt serves as a salty brick for room air improvement, or as a salt lamp for tea lights or electrical operation. As granules, Himalayan salt can be supplied for various purposes.
Himalayan salt is offered under numerous names. These include Lahore salt, Alexander salt, Hunza crystal salt, crystal salt, or emperor salt. They should all be reminiscent of legends about the Himalayan salt, or highlight the special and noble ness of the Himalayan salt. If you look at the ingredients, there is not much special about it. Only the unusual pink hue, which can tend to the orange, is exceptional on the Himalayan salt.
What effects are attributed to Himalayan salt?
In the esoteric scene, the Himalayan salt was first presented in 2001 as a particularly valuable and unusually mineral-rich salt – by the author Peter Ferreiras.
Behind the exotic-sounding author pseudonym, however, lies a witty businessman named Peter Druf. He described the Himalayan salt in a book on “Water and Salt as the Primal Springs of Life” as a panacea against modern diseases of civilization. He says the Himalayan salt can even compensate for the consequences of years of malnutrition thanks to its mineral richness. It was propagated for the first time that the Himalayan salt contained 84 valuable chemical substances, which were put together in a similar way to human blood.
There was also talk of energetic vibrations and transmitted by the Himalayan salt “Information” from the millennia-old salt warehouses. It should not be a coincidence that Peter Ruf was the owner of a company that exported Himalayan salt on a large scale to all over the world. To confirm his statements, the businessman had them confirmed by an ominous Las Vegas-based Institute of Biophysical Research. However, this institute is demonstrably not in existence.
Nevertheless, the triumph of pink-orange salt began with this fin. The boom continues to this day. It ensures consistently high sales figures until recently. The Himalayan salt is used among gourmets, naturopaths, physiotherapists or esoteric ists. It is used as table salt, for room energization, as bath salt and for air improvement. Some ascribe healing properties to him.
If faith can move mountains, Himalayan salt is actually something of a catalyst for our desires and desires. In many ways, it is little more than a placebo with an assumed healing effect. But it is worth taking a closer look precisely for this reason. The Himalayan salt obviously meets unsatisfied needs. Its actual characteristics are obviously not valuable enough to us.
Himalayan salt – a fossil treasure?
The Pakistani Himalayan salt is one of the rock salts that can be extracted in open-cast mining and without the use of machinery. The extensive salt deposits arise when a sea dries out before time immemorial. In the case of the largest salt deposit on earth in Pakistan, earth-throwing have created a mountain range at this point. The salt layers enclosed in it were pressed together under extreme pressure.
Enclosed within rock layers,contamination in Himalayan salt is virtually excluded. The high purity of the Himalayan salt is based on this. On the other hand, it is ensured by the gentle type of mining that is carried out chemical-free in open-cast mining. Unlike sea salt with its tiny crystals, the crystals of Himalayan salt are much larger. The colouring of this rock salt is also different.
When salt rock is formed, the salinity and mineral richness of the vanished sea define what ingredients the rock salt receives. From a geological point of view, Himalayan salt is quite special – simply because of its extraordinary colour. Legendary attributions – such as the discovery of the vast Pakistani salt deposits by the army of Alexander the Great – would therefore not have been necessary.
From the beginning, the people of the region dismantled the Himalayan salt by hand in open-cast mining. They traded in it, mostly on well-known caravan paths such as the Silk Road. The Pakistani salt warehouses are located at a depth of 400-600 meters. They cover more than 70 percent of the total needs of modernity. Pakistan’s salt mines for Himalayan salt are geographically located on the edge of the Himalayas. But in itself the name of this rock salt should not be moved to the Himalayas. The ridge near Lahore is no longer part of the Himalayan mountains.
On the other hand, the Himalayan mountains have always been surrounded by myths and romanticizations. The designation of a nearby rock salt as “Himalayasalz” is therefore a sales promotion.
The health benefits of Himalayan salt
In the information age, modern humans are well aware of the health benefits and the possible damage caused by a salt supply. He should at least be. Common sodium chloride is also the main component of the pink Himalayan salt.
What is particularly striking about the Himalayan salt is its colour and its high purity. Environmental toxins did not have access to natural salt deposits. Salt salt, which is a pure industrial salt, always contains the finest particles of foreign substances – for example, traces of petroleum, microplastics or other environmental substances.
The correct thing is that salt is healthy in moderation and indispensable as a seasoning for food. However, today’s salt consumption is anything but health-promoting. Just as sugar is added to many industrially produced foods, a high fat or salt content is characteristic of industrial finished products. Their health benefits are highly questionable.
At best, therefore, the two percent of trace elements in the Himalayan salt have a health value. But here, too, there is an analogy to the “healthy” raw sugar, which is supposedly to give valuable trace elements a added health value. In fact, the iron oxide in the Himalayan salt can positively affect the hemoglobin balance. Hemoglobin is a red blood dye. He is responsible for ensuring that the blood cells receive a higher oxygen uptake. Much more in remarkable health benefits is not found in the ingredients of the Himalayan salt.
What do the other trace elements in the Himalayan salt do?
Many chemists have made chemical analyses of the supposedly valuable rock salt, following the boom around the Himalayan salt. Interesting are the highly different laboratory results. An explanation for this could lie in the interests of the respective sponsors of the studies. Another explanation is the use of different test methods or laboratory samples. The chemists agree only on the content of 98 percent sodium chloride. In addition, everyone confirms that the iron ions in the Himalayan salt are responsible for the typical coloring of the Himalayan salt.
The formation of a dried sea in the Himalayan salt provides a certain proportion of calcareous minerals from mussels and hard-shelled marine life. But as soon as it comes down to the supposedly health-relevant ingredients, all researchers disagree. Some speak of 84 other minerals, which are said to resemble the composition of the human blood in relation to the minerals. However, other laboratory tests have not been able to confirm this. Rather, it is about 8-10 other minerals found in the Himalayan salt.
The strange propagation of minerals in Himalayan salt is probably due to esoteric wishful thinking. The composition of the Himalayan salt is similar to that of other rock salts. In addition to iron particles, Himalayan salt usually contains certain amounts of calcium and magnesium, as well as manganese, cobalt, potassium, fluoride and copper. In the Himalayan salt, which comes from a dried sea, there is also a certain amount of iodine. The natural form of the iodine is actually better absorbed by the organism than other iodine forms.
A second argument for the high health value of Himalayan salt is its purity. In addition, it is stated that the interaction of the contained trace elements produces special vibration alder patterns. These are able to correct energy deficits in the organism and to donate life energy. According to this, Himalayan salt has a high bio-energetic value. Its mineral composition is particularly adapted to the human organism. Whether this is true, however, is debatable.
Himalayan salt as a popular kitchen spice
Real gourmets don’t buy any supermarket salt. They use a mill with rock salt. Among star chefs and gourmets, the Himalayan salt is therefore highly valued and has a positive image. In fact, it can be used for seasoning due to the fine and coarser grains in which it is offered. Unlike other table salts, Himalayan salt is unrefined. It remains completely natural. This, too, is cited as an argument for its high culinary value. However, the high condiment force is given equally to all types of salt.
However, gourmets argue that the taste of Himalayan salt is more intense and aromatic. The “mouth feeling” is also different. The economical use does the rest to describe this table salt as healthier compared to others. But an excess of Himalayan salt can also lead to high blood pressure and edema. Whether Himalayan salt is used as table salt or as brine for the production of soleggs, it is not really healthier than other table salts.

Athletes should also use brine with Himalayan salt from the point of view of naturopaths. The high electrolyte losses due to endurance or competitive sports are cited as an argument for this. In fact, the organism of an active athlete loses not only sweat, but also minerals and trace elements. These need to be renewed in a timely manner so that the strained muscles can continue to function. In addition to the supply of proteins and magnesium, drinking water with Himalayan salt is considered a suitable means for the regeneration of the organism. In this sense, Himalayan salt can also be used as bath salts.
Various uses for Himalayan salt

Oral hygiene with brine made of Himalayan salt

Himalayan salt baths should also have a soothing effect on skin diseases. This is demonstrably true when the cures for skin-sick people on the highly salty Dead Sea are taken into account. Contrary to all expectations, the Himalayan salt does not dry out the diseased skin unreasonably. Therefore, people with psoriasis or neurodermatitis can actually benefit from brine baths with Himalayan salt.
To prepare a bath, 37°C of warm water and about one kilogram of Himalayan salt are brought together in a bathtub. In it, the skin patient bathes for half an hour. No other bathing additives should be used. After the bath, the skin should not be scrubbed,but only wiped off.
Relieve respiratory diseases through irritant climate
Salt-assisted therapies for respiratory diseases have been successful since the 19th century and into modern times. In the case of persistent respiratory diseases or chronic respiratory diseases, a stay in salty sea air, or in a saline creates relief.
At home, sufferers can use saltwater inhalations with Himalayan salt. The simplest application is so-called “salt inhalers” such as the “Insalin” mini inhaler. Slightly more complex are salt water-fillable inhalers that are electrically operated. The inhaled salt water vapours have been shown to have a mucosal-, cough-irritant and devulsionaleffect. They moisturize the airways, and have been shown to relieve the discomfort.
Air improvement with salt lamps
Salt lamps are often made from larger salt chunks. These are hollowed-out salt stonesthat can be heated inside with tea lights or light bulbs. Salt lamps are used in light therapy because of their homely light.
Salt lamps are also very popular with the public because of the supposed ionization of the breathing air with salt particles. The air-enhancing effect is due to the evaporation of the moisture that attracts the warm salt. This supposedly dissolves salt ions and is released into the room air. This is not scientifically confirmed.
Is the Himalayan salt worth it now – or not?
It should be noted that Himalayan salt is usually offered at a much higher price than any industrial salt. However, no one should consider more than 2-5 euros for 100 grams of Himalayan salt to be affordable. With bad luck, the interested party buys only a pink colored table salt when buying supposed seasoning salts from the Himalayas. Counterfeiters are known to jump on every lucrative trend, including finely ground rock salt. So it is wiser to buy Himalayan salt in larger crumbs and to buy a suitable salt mill.
According to a test by the “Stiftung Warentest”, the cheapest Himalayan salt performed best in the test. Some much more expensive Himalayan salts were rated as deficient. Appropriate evaluation notes on a Himalayan salt should therefore be understood as a signal for a high-quality product.
Many claims about Himalayan salt are demonstrably false. Nevertheless, some applications for Himalayan salt are often tried and tested and useful, as could be demonstrated here.
