Cherry seed pillow – serious
Well, again on the way back from Sunday lunch with the relatives? Let me guess: the trousers stretch suspiciously, foul-smelling gases make their way outside and no matter what position you take – it’s the wrong one! But it’s not just you who are still in the passenger seat in front of you… Your friend got a visit from the red aunt, who caused her back pain and abdominal cramps. So you have the choice: quickly and conveniently throw in a round of pain pills or try out new things from the eerie world of naturopathy.
Homeopathy is not for you? Your girlfriend isn’t particularly on acupuncture? And anything that is green and smells of herbs is currently causing a nausea in you? The bad news is that many alternatives don’t stay with you. The good news: Grandma’s cherry seed pillow!
Cherry seed pillow – who thinks of such a thing?
No one knows the origins of the cherry seed pillow so well. It is rumoured that it was invented by workers of a cherry liqueur factory who wanted to remedy the situation in view of their occupational muscle tensions. When they realized how well cherry kernels store oven heat, they sewed their own cherry seed pillows from the factory’s waste products. In fact, fossil finds near Münster prove that the cherry seed cushion already existed in the Middle Ages!
While the cherry seed pillow is still largely unknown in our European neighbours Italy and France, we produce it in various sizes, silly and less silly covers in this country, Switzerland and Austria. Whether baby bloating or an over-eaten adult – the cherry seed pillow faithfully fulfills its service!
How the cherry seed pillow works
Cherry seeds have the property of storing their ambient temperature excellently and, due to their small size, better to cuddle than the classic heat bottle. In addition, due to its fine structure, a massage effect is created during laying on, which provides a particularly good remedy for tension due to striking movements. The advantage over painkillers is that the body is not simply feigned to be free from pain, but the source of pain is treated in a targeted manner. The heat emanating from the cherry seed cushion causes vasodilation, i.e. a natural widening of the blood vessels, so that the blood circulation in the tissue increases. The increased blood circulation in turn increases the oxygen supply in the cells and the release of degradation products, which has a positive effect on muscle regeneration. The pain-relieving effect is achieved by the transmission of the heat stimulus to the pain center in the brain, which triggers the release of pain-inhibiting messenger substances.
The cherry seed cushion also has an analgesic effect, but the mechanism of action works the other way around: the blood vessels concomsife, the tissue in the cooled area is less blooded, so that the formation of bruises can be prevented. The trick is that the cold-sensitive nerves direct the cold stimulus to the brain faster than the pain-conducting nerve pathways the pain impulse. So it is the temporal overlap of these two different stimuli in the brain that inhibits the perception of pain.
Applications of the cherry seed pillow
As you can see, the special thing about the cherry seed pillow is that it not only stores heat, but also cold, which is why it can be used in many ways. So the next time you come from the dentist, you can leave the frozen peas in the freezer and put on the cherry seed pillow instead. It keeps you cold for a long time, is dry and doesn’t melt away under your cheek! The same principle also applies to other types of injuries such as bruises, sprains and insect bites.
Extra tip for morning muffle: If you’re struggling with a bloated face on Mondays after getting up, the ice-cooled cherry seed pillow is your best friend.
More famous, however, is the use of the heated cherry seed pillow. It is heated for about 45-90 seconds in the microwave (or oven) until it reaches a pleasant temperature and then placed on the aching body area. It is particularly suitable for the treatment of colds, kidney and bladder disorders, rheumatic complaints, osteoarthritis, gout, abdominal, control and stomach pains as well as muscle tension and sore muscles. Incidentally, the warmth of the cherry seed pillow also has a mucous effect, so that it can be applied to chronic respiratory diseases. But even with minor pains such as neck and headaches, the cherry seed pillow does a lot of work!
In the home spa area, the cherry seed pillow has also become established, and that is during the sauna session. For this purpose, it is sufficient to place the pillow 10-15 minutes before the sauna session in the heating sauna, then join in and place the warm pillow as a neck squirrel or knee roll.
If valerian, balm, night hops and co sometimes do not work again, the cherry seed pillow is also excellent for breastfeeding restlessness and arousal states. Quengelige Babies (but especially stressed adults!) can take the cherry seed pillow to bed in the evening. If necessary, some essential oil (preferably lavender) can also be dripped on to the pillowcase. You will see that just a few minutes after laying on, there is already relaxation.
Extra tip for cold feet: Gone are the days when you try to warm up the stiff frozen feet in a foot bath that is lukewarm after just 5 minutes. Instead, put a warmed-up cherry seed pillow in the bowl, put your chilled haxen on top and cover with a second cherry seed pillow. If you then take turns pushing your feet into the pillow, you will also receive a blood circulation-promoting and extremely relaxing foot massage!
It’s important that you never put your cherry seed pillow on open wounds. Furthermore, heat is counterproductive for acute inflammations such as abscesses and other skin irritations, as it strengthens the inflammatory process by providing an ideal breeding ground for viruses and bacteria. So if you are affected by the above complaints, please use your cherry seed pillow at these body parts only cold!
Very rare, however, possible are allergic reactions to the reference substance. If you have an unpleasant itch shortly after you hang up, I recommend you to make a different reference to it. Persons suffering from contact allergies, especially cold or heat-induced hives, should consult a doctor before using the cherry seed pillow.
Also rarely do circulatory problems occur due to the heat-related vascular widening in the form of sudden headaches and nausea up to fainting, which is why patients with heart failure are discouraged from heat therapies.
Caution should also be exercised in diabetics, as their feeling of heat is disturbed by illness and there is therefore a risk of burns. In the case of cancers, inflammation of internal organs, epilepsy and tuberculosis, the cherry seed pillow should not be used warmly, as this may exacerbate the disease.
You should refrain from cold treatments if you suffer from urinary tract infections, an irritant bladder or high blood pressure.
Reasons to purchase a cherry seed pillow:
Apart from the wide range of applications, cherry seed pillows are very durable and environmentally friendly. Unlike their competitors, such as electric heating pads and heat bottles, they are made from natural, non-chemically treated cherry kernels, some fabric and thread. Another advantage of the cherry seed pillow is that, unlike heat-cold gel packs, it is reusable and is a particularly safe product: since it is neither powered by electricity nor water and does not contain any toxic substances, the cherry core cushion provides that its temperature has been checked beforehand, no danger to children there.
If you suffer from chronic pain disorders, it is especially important that you find an alternative to classic painkillers. These often have the self-inscarside to be anti-inflammatory (especially aspirin and ibuprofen), which is not a problem with sporadic use, but with frequent use, the formation of prostaglandins, important protective hormones for the gastrointestinal tract, which are kidneys and the cardiovascular system, severely disturbs. Since many painkillers such as paracetamol are metabolized via the liver, organ damage and stomach bleeding can also occur here with long-term intake. Many people are allergic to conventional pain medications or with intolerances, which makes successful pain therapy difficult. The cherry seed pillow, on the other hand, has hardly any side effects when used correctly and has an immediate effect, as it is applied locally and therefore does not have to pass through the gastrointestinal tract first.
Another factor you should consider when purchasing a cherry seed pillow is the savings that come with it. If you consider that aspirin granules cost 8.98EUR, ibuprofen with 9.00EUR and Dolormin Extra with a proud 21.43EUR (for 50 tablets), the investment in a cherry seed pillow is not so high…
Where do you get a cherry seed pillow and how much do you have to bleach for it?
In the meantime, there are countless manufacturers of cherry seed pillows. However, what you should pay attention to when buying is that the cherry seeds have not been chemically treated, as this leads to an unpleasant smell of the product. Ideally, cherry seeds are scrubbed under warm water in the first pass with a brush and then dried. In the second step, they are washed again in warm water to finally free them from the remaining pulp.
Cherry core cushions can now be bought in different sizes and shapes: from the neck squirrel to the slightly more eye-catching cherry core glasses for the eye area, almost everything is represented! The smaller models are already available from 3EUR, if you want to buy a normally large cherry seed pillow (18×20 cm) you should plan 10EUR, for a larger (40×30 with several chambers) about 20EUR. If you are still suspicious of online shopping or if you would like to pick up the cherry seed pillow before you buy it, you will find it in most pharmacies and health food stores. Occasionally, cherry seed pillows can also be found in drugstores such as Rossmann and DM, depending on the week of action!
If you decide to buy your cherry seed pillow online, you should make sure that additional chambers are sewn into the pillow. This is not so important for smaller cushions such as cherry core glasses, but for larger ones, as otherwise the cherry kernels move too much in the cushion and are not evenly distributed in the shell. You should also buy a second pillowcase, which you put over the cherry core pillow, as frequent washing harms the cores.
Industrial production of the cherry seed pillow:
Normally, sour cherry kernels are used for the production of cherry seed pillows, as they are a by-product of industrial jam, juice and liqueur production. As a rule, they are freed from their pulp by being sterilized in boiling water. They are then dried in special dryers for up to 22 hours until a residual moisture of up to 8-11% remains in the cores. After successful drying, the sour cherry seeds are filled into different sized units and released for trading. So you can buy not only the finished cherry seed cushion but also loose cherry seeds.
Do-it-yourself cherry seed pillow for amateurs:
If buying a cherry seed pillow seems too impersonal to you, you’re too stingy, or you want to give your new best friend an individual touch, you can do it yourself. You don’t need tailoring experience or other special skills, just some skill, few materials and – if you only want to use cherry seeds from your own garden – a good digestion! You need:
- Needle and thread or a sewing machine
- depending on the size one or two cloth bags (the ones you can buy in the supermarket when your purchase is degenerated…)
- approx. 1 kg of home-bought (or self-sweetened) cherry seeds
- alternatively some dried lavender or chamomile flowers
- 1. First, you need to wash and dry the cherry seeds carefully. The best thing is if you let them dry in the sun, so you save electricity. If this is not possible due to the weather, you can also use the good old oven, but you must not set it warmer than 60° Celsius, otherwise the cores can burst. Keep in mind that drying can take 24 hours!
- 2. First, cut off the handles of your cloth bag. In this way, three sides of your cherry seed pillow are already sewn, so you only have to close one afterwards. If you want to sew a larger cherry seed pillow, which you can wrap completely around the waist, you can use two cloth bags that you sew together (double the amount of cherry seeds in this case!).
- 3. Depending on how many chambers you want to sew into your pillow, you should mark them in the appropriate places of the fabric. If you want to divide your cherry seed pillow into 4 chambers, you need to apply 3 vertical seams placed at even intervals.
4. Next, you distribute your filling material evenly into the 4 pockets and finally sew the opening of your former fabric bag together – et voila, your self-sewn cherry core cushion!
Tips for over-motivated people:
Especially practical with a larger cherry seed pillow is a Velcro fastening at both ends. In this way, you can ideally adjust the pillow to the size of the body part to be treated without having to hold or tie it. Velcro can be found at Karstadt and Kaufhof in the creative department, on the internet and of course in the craft shop. The great thing about the Velcro is that it is self-adhesive – so attaching it is easy! First, use your cherry core cushion to measure your abdominal and leg circumference and mark the spots on the fabric. Then cut the Velcro fastening appropriately and attach it to the previously marked places. Congratulations, you’ve just made your own bespoke cherry seed pillow!
If your cherry seed pillow is intended as a gift, it may be less chic to leave the “Lidl” or “Aldi” imprint on the pillow fabric. So how about a little embroidery? On the Internet you will find a wealth of tutorials that introduce you to the high art of embroidery. Incidentally, for hygienic reasons, you should sew a second, washable cover, otherwise sweat and smells will pass directly into your cherry core cushion. This brings us to our next topic:
Care instructions for cherry seed pillows
Essential for the longevity of your cherry seed pillow is that you store it dry and wash as rarely as possible. Ideal is if you wrap the cherry seed pillow in a washable cloth before use, so that it does not come into contact with sweat, saliva or other liquids. If you use your cherry seed pillow in a second pillow case, wash it at least once a month.
When it comes to washing the cherry seed pillow, the spirits diverge, as wetness brings with it the risk of rot. Due to the fact that the cores are sewn in most cherry seed pillows and are therefore not removable, gentle yet effective drying is quite difficult (below 11% moisture content!). If your pillow has stains or smells unpleasant, you can rub it first with a brush or with a moistened microfiber cloth. For particularly stubborn dirt, you can make a 1:2 apple cider vinegar water solution, which you apply to the fabric with a spray bottle, let it act and work with a sponge. So that your cherry seed pillow doesn’t smell like unwashed feet afterwards, you should let it ventilate extensively and then sprinkle with an essential oil of your choice. If you want to wash your cherry seed pillow, you have two options:
- 1. Hand wash: Here you dive your cherry seed pillow into lukewarm water and scrub it with a sponge. Don’t use soap, as the surfactants it contains attack the cherry kernels!
- 2. Washing machine wash: Choose this option only if your washing machine has a gentle wash, because a strong slingshot damages your cherry seed pillow. To save the pillow, you can wrap it in a sweater. Then set your washing machine to 30 ° Celsius and select the gentle washing process. Auch bei der Waschmaschinenwäsche solltest du unbedingt auf Waschmittel und Seife verzichten. Note: the cherry seed pillow is always only washed with water!
- 3. For drying, you can place the cherry seed pillow in the sun or on the heater. Please protect your cherry seed pillow from the dryer! The direct heat and repeated pitching in the drum would make the cherry seeds crack.
Be aware that frequent washing significantly shortens the life of your cherry seed pillow. A single rotten cherry core is enough to make all the other cherry seeds and thus your entire pillow gamble! If your cherry seed pillow contains flowers or herbs, the washing process would not only destroy the scent molecules, but would most likely also cause mold – so think about it well! In general, the average lifespan of a cherry seed pillow is 2 years, after which it should be replaced for hygienic reasons.
